Founding Engineer at Afternoon (F24)
About the role
You’ll be the first engineering hire, an extremely leveraged role. You’ll work directly with founders to build a highly integrated back-office product spanning state compliance, sales tax, bookkeeping and corporate income taxes.
What will you need to bring
- 3+ years of professional experience as a full-stack software engineer with a proven track record of execution. You've built outstanding products and collaborated closely within engineering teams.
- High ownership and agency. We’re a lean startup, and you'll be expected to care deeply about the product and fully own significant parts of its development.
Nice to have:
- Fintech experience
- Practical experience with applied AI (e.g., working with LLMs, building evaluations)
- Familiarity with our technology stack: TypeScript, React, PostgreSQL

No-one starts a business to do admin work. Our mission is to make running a business free of admin chores for millions of small business owners, by automating bookkeeping, government compliance, and taxes.
Since we launched in October, we support dozens of companies who rely on us for their taxes and bookkeeping. We are growing quickly, and have an ambitious product roadmap for next two years that we need help with.
We previously worked at Gusto, Brex and Notion, and know what it takes to build a company servicing hundreds of thousands of small businesses. We are an in-person company, working out of the historic art deco Manhattan office.
